Roll-off is the container type most people picture when they say dumpster: an open-top steel box on wheels that a truck delivers, sets down and later winches back on. It is the right tool for anything from a garage purge to a full house demolition, which is why it is most of what we do.

We run four sizes out of our Mooresville yard, and the difference between them is not just capacity. A 10 yard is short and low, built for heavy material. A 30 yard is the same footprint as a 20 but two feet taller, so it takes more volume without needing more driveway. Getting that distinction right is most of the sizing conversation.

Whatever you take, the price is flat and includes delivery, pickup, your rental window and disposal up to the agreed tonnage.

When a roll-off is the right call

Any project you cannot fit in a pickup twice

The rough breakpoint. Below that, a couple of runs to the county convenience centre is cheaper.

Anything with a deadline

A container in the driveway keeps a project moving. A growing pile in the garage does not.

Heavy material of any kind

Concrete, brick, dirt and clay need the low walls and heavy-duty build of a 10 yard.

Jobs where you load over days, not hours

You keep the container for the rental window and load at your own pace.

Sites with awkward access

We can often place where a truck-and-trailer service cannot get in.

Multi-phase work

Swap-outs let you keep the same footprint through demo, framing and finish.

Storm cleanup

When municipal debris collection is weeks behind, a container is immediate.

Anything you would rather not sort into bags

Load it in as it comes off the wall.

Choosing between the four sizes

Start with the material, not the volume. Heavy and inert — concrete, brick, block, tile, soil — means a 10 yard regardless of how big the job feels, because you will reach the weight limit first. Mixed household or renovation debris means 15 or 20 for a room or two, 20 or 30 for a whole house. Bulky and light — framing offcuts, packaging, furniture — is where the 30 earns its money. If you genuinely cannot tell, describe the job on the phone and we will size it; being wrong costs us more than it costs you.

What delivery actually looks like

The truck needs roughly 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance to raise the hoist. The driver reverses in, tilts the bed and the container rolls down on steel wheels before the rails settle. Those two moments — wheels rolling, rails sitting — are where driveway damage happens, which is why we lay boards. Before the truck arrives, move cars, bins and basketball goals, mark irrigation heads and septic lids, and tell us about any new concrete, soft ground or low service drop.

Roll-Off Dumpster Rental FAQs

What is the difference between a roll-off and a regular dumpster?

A roll-off is an open-top container delivered by a hook or cable truck and left on site for you to load. The enclosed bins behind restaurants are front-load containers emptied on a route. Roll-offs come in far larger sizes and are the right choice for projects rather than ongoing waste.

How much space do I need for a roll-off?

A 20 or 30 yard needs roughly 22 feet of length and about 10 feet of width including working space, plus around 60 feet of clear straight approach for the truck and 23 feet of overhead clearance. A 10 yard is much shorter at about 12 feet.

How full can I load it?

Level with the top rail, no higher. An overfilled container cannot be legally tarped and transported, so we cannot collect it until it is levelled — which usually means you moving material at the worst possible moment. Load heavy and flat items on the bottom and fill voids as you go.

Can you deliver on a gravel driveway or grass?

Often, but with caveats. Gravel ruts and displaces, and Piedmont red clay turns soft fast after rain, so a loaded truck can leave deep ruts in a lawn. We will tell you honestly whether the ground will take it on the day.

What happens to the material after collection?

It goes to a permitted transfer station or disposal facility depending on the debris type. We separate recoverable material — scrap metal, clean wood, cardboard, brush — where we can, and we comply with North Carolina landfill disposal bans on every load.
